AppleWorks Pro? AppleWorks works, while iWorks actually increases your productivity, or something. Even less than Office! I find it unpleasant to look at and work in. If I remember correctly since my last, frustrating, Appleworks experience, footnotes are difficult to set up, format, or convert to endnotes.
Tables are also difficult to set up and format, especially when mixing images, tables and text. No little dot in the close button telling me when a document has unsaved changes. It imports Word documents rather poorly if they're anything beyond basic text this probably is due to microsoft's closed format, but it still greatly limits the utility of AppleWorks for me. No ability to use or define styles. Like I said, maybe some of these things don't bother other people and many people don't use or care about these features though I imagine everyone is annoyed by just how little Appleworks resembles other MacOSX apps.
But between TextEdit and Word, all of my word processing needs are taken care of from the most basic documents to the most complex. Installed the upgrade, didn't notice any differences. A more MacOS X-saavy upgrade would be neat, but for my minimal needs, it's fine now.

That the spreadsheet doesn't have a decent solver? Can it build a table of contents? Can it track changes?
I'm sure I could go on if I bothered to use it more. Honestly, I don't use word either, but I know it doesn't have most of these limitations. For simple stuff appleworks probably works well, for complex stuff word or LaTeX are far better options. Personally, I've been quite pleased with Appleworks' ability to read and write. The spreadsheet is quite sad, though.
Looks like no one has comments on if the new update actually improves anything. I'll have to give it a spin myself and see. Will comment next week. So many annoying things - just to mention a few: no support for long filenames has it been fixed in 6. All those components are also free with the possible exception of skill , and I don't think they require much skill to install, they all have GUI installers.
