The bottom line is that if you want to use it, then Windows 10 is your best best. With Windows 10, Microsoft committed to more timely updates. And it has executed. In fact, those who want to access the cutting-edge — or the bleeding edge — can join the free Insider program, which puts out new updates almost every week.

Insiders get access to fixes, tweaks, and major new features — and they do add up over time. Not only do Insiders get immediate access to the latest capabilities, but they also help shape the OS by providing ongoing feedback to Microsoft. In one of the more recent official updates, for example Windows 10 Fall Creators update , Microsoft added a host of new features and revamped the user interface. Generally speaking, Microsoft has committed to a biannual update schedule that provides a major new version each April and October or thereabouts, and that means Windows 10 never grows stale.

Over time, this rapid update policy has given Windows 10 an edge over MacOS, which updates every year but usually with just one or two significant new features. The rapid Windows 10 update cycle does mean getting used to new features and being exposed to possible bugs on a more frequent basis, but so far Windows users seem to favor the tradeoff. Production quality can vary wildly, even within hardware from the same manufacturer. That makes choosing a new Windows 10 PC a challenge on occasion. Windows includes a numerous Microsoft tools and safeguards to prevent and clean viruses and other threats, and third-party tools are also available.

The wide variety of Windows hardware can cause problems as well. For that reason, Windows is more difficult to administer for the typical user, although the Windows update infrastructure built into Windows 10 does make things easier than they were in the old days of scouring the web looking for updates. Windows is in a must better position than it was just a few years ago.

The newest version, Windows 10, is more elegant and easier to understand than past editions, and it receives frequent updates. The problem of complexity does remain. You will likely encounter more bugs with Windows than with its competition. Share on Facebook Tweet this Share.

Windows, Mac, or Linux? We compare the pros and cons of these computing platforms

Posted 3 days ago — By Alex Blake. Apple spends years working on how its products look. The company is all about the details, even the internals of its computers are beautifully constructed. In just the last couple of months, Microsoft introduced the Surface Pro 4, a svelte device that comes closer than ever before to the promise of a tablet that can replace a laptop.

Plus, the Surface Book's screen detaches to become a laptop on its own. Plus, a lot of manufacturers like Dell and Asus have taken their design cues from Microsoft and generally upped their game, releasing Windows laptops and tablets that are at least a little easier on the eyes. There are still plenty of ugly Windows PCs out there, depending on the make and model. But finally, some real options are starting to emerge. On average, Macs tend to be noticeably more expensive than their PC counterparts, even for comparable specifications.

Windows superfans call this the "Apple tax. Hardcore gamers prefer Windows, largely because PCs are so customizable. Seriously competitive players obsess over everything from the graphics card to the processor to the amount of memory inside their computers, constantly tweaking and buying new hardware to stay current. Macs, meanwhile, are almost impossible to upgrade easily. And unless you shell out big bucks for the most decked-out Mac models, they're underpowered compared to comparable Windows gaming machines in the first place. Most importantly of all, while Mac is more of a gaming platform than ever, it still can't match the depth and breadth of the game selection for the Windows PC — a legacy stretching back to the nineties.

When your Mac breaks, you can book an appointment and take it to your local Apple Store. There, a specialist can help you out with your Mac. If the problem can be fixed in one session, there's usually no charge. Microsoft has its retail stores, with its Genius Bar-like Answer Desk. The customer service at the Microsoft Stores is great. But unlike Apple, Microsoft doesn't make all of the computers it sells, which means that they sometimes have to send it back to the manufacturer for repairs. And there simply aren't as many Microsoft Stores as there are Apple Stores. Security company AVG writes that since there are still fewer Macs than than Windows computers out there, Apple's platform simply presents a smaller target for attackers.

But that won't last for too long, the company writes, and we've seen evidence of this as an increasing number of viruses have surfaced on Mac computers in recent years. Apple also says it's added new types of encryption and security features in the recent OS X El Capitan release to keep your computer safe. And, since Apple's Mac operating system is built on Unix, it's a little more secure by default than Windows, Macworld reports.

With Windows 10, Microsoft tried to merge the user-friendliness of Windows 7 with the touchscreen-friendliness of Windows 8. Generally speaking, it works. And you can switch between a traditional desktop and a "tablet mode" that gives you a grid of apps. Mac OS X has a cleaner, less busy look. At its most basic level, you have a desktop, a dock for accessing all of your favorite apps, and a taskbar across the top of the screen.

The major difference in performance is likely the result of the file system performance though. Still, with all the steps to do this conversion in Nero compared to iDVD, the Apple process is much easier for the consumer. Based upon the tests and the results, it appears that the Windows XP operating system is actually a better performer when it comes to running the applications compared to the Mac OS X operating system.

Having said that, there are a number of caveats that I wish to point out. First and foremost is the fact that many of the applications in this test were running under the Rosetta emulation due to lack of Universal Applications.

  • adobe raw file converter mac?

  • how to make a graph on mac pages.

When a Universal Application such as iTunes is used there is no performance difference. This means that the performance gap will likely be closed between the two operating systems as more applications are ported over to the Universal binaries. Second, there is the difference in operating systems and usability. While windows does perform better in many of the tests, the amount of text and menus that a user needs to go through to accomplish a task is far easier on Mac OS X compared to the Windows XP interface.

2. Mac computers are easier to get repaired.

This may make the performance difference negligible for those who can't figure out how to use the applications. Finally, the process of installing Windows XP onto a Mac is not an easy process and not recommended at this point for those that aren't very knowledgeable on computers.
